How-to: Set Up Your Cookie Consent Banner
Congratulations! You've taken the first step in data privacy compliance by using a cookie consent banner on your website. That's a big deal. According to laws worldwide, website and business owners must display a full cookie banner to stay data privacy compliant.
Here, we'll explore how you can set up a successful cookie consent banner on your website in a few simple steps.
It's just a cookie banner. It should be straightforward, right?
You are correct! It's not a big deal to set up a cookie banner. If you already have all the materials to get started, it can be live on your website within minutes. Here's what you'll need to begin:
Cookie Scanner: This tool will help you organize your cookies and separate them according to categories, such as third-party cookies, nonessential cookies, functional cookies, and strictly necessary cookies.
Cookie Banner Configurator: This will give you multi-language and customization options, so your cookie banner is accessible around the world and recognizable to your end users.
Cookie Consent Dashboard: This will help you monitor cookie usage and consent preferences to stay in compliance with differing laws and regulations.
Consent Tracker: This tool helps you manage consent preferences, opt-ins, and opt-outs. It also stores these preferences making it easy for you to go back and get the records you need should an end user or lawmaker ask for proof of compliance.
Step 1: Scan your cookies
Before you set up your cookie banner, you'll need to understand what kind of cookies your website collects. They could be third-party cookies, strictly necessary cookies, or first-party cookies. A Cookie Scanner can generate this report for your website, with a quick scan.
Once you're aware of what cookies you're handling, you'll better understand how they can be organized and what type of notice you'll need to give your end users. For instance, non-essential cookies require explicit consent from users, while strictly necessary cookies that allow your website to function at its most basic level do not. However, you must still inform your end users that their data is being used. You can check the categories by accessing the Cookie Category page.
On this page, you can also add, remove, or edit cookies. This feature allows you to be in complete control of cookies.
Step 2: Configure your cookie banner
You can configure your cookie banner to be in compliance with laws around the world. This includes the General Data Privacy Regulation (GDPR), the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), the Virginia Consumer Data Protection Act (VCDPA), or blanket global compliance. All you need to do is open the Banner Configuration page and choose where you want to be compliant.
You can preview how your cookie banner will look on mobile or web under each regulation.
Once you’re done with regulation configuration, it’s time to move on to the next step. You can set your preferences for auto-cookie blocking that, by default, only allows absolutely essential cookies until an end user has accepted all cookies or set their preferences. You can also add your logo and customize your cookie banner to match your brand colors and scheme.
Step 3: Consent tracking
Now that you have your banner set up, you can move on to consent tracking.
Click on Consent Tracking under the Cookie Consent menu. You should be able to see all of your cookie usage here, along with the category. You can filter your results by date, consent type, consent status, and country.
Step 4: Install your javascript
Your purchase of a cookie consent management solution will come with a line of javascript that you can easily add to your website. This will be done on the backend. You'll need to paste this script line close to your website's <head> tag. It'll look something like this:
Save your changes and go to your website just as an end user would. Your cookie banner should look something like this:
Looks good, right? You'll want to check that all your links are working correctly. Users shouldn't have to take multiple steps to decline cookies – it should be just as easy to decline as it is to accept them all. Remember that you cannot pre-check that "accept all cookies" button. It is against the law in many regions and could result in your business being fined or otherwise penalized.
